A short voyage in Saylands
The latest Saylands update puts a short game one tap away. Play against one rival, with a five-round limit. In Beginner, choose the phrase for the goods you want before making your trade, or use Show me for a hint. Longer games and the other levels are still available.
A boat, a few goods and another trader to beat. That is enough to begin. You should not need to plan a whole evening before finding out whether a language game is for you.
The latest Saylands update makes the first voyage smaller and puts more of the language in your hands.
One tap into a shorter game
Open Saylands, pick your language and choose Play a short game. You face one rival, aiming for five stars. The bell ends the game after five rounds at the latest, so the finish stays in sight. There is no countdown timer.
Your turn still has the same rhythm: roll the market die, trade or build, then end your turn. Bots move sooner between turns, so more of the visit belongs to you. Tera's first-turn guidance is there when you need it, and you can skip it.
Already halfway through a voyage? On the same browser, your saved solo game opens where you left it.
Choose the word that makes the deal
In Beginner, the language now asks you to do a little more than watch a sentence appear.
Pick what you want from a stall. Before confirming the trade, choose which of three phrases names those goods. The question follows your actual deal: change the item or quantity and it changes too. City maps use their own market goods.
Choose the right phrase and the whole trade sentence appears, with its English underneath. Then make the deal and your goods change on the board.
Not sure? Show me reveals the phrase and lets you carry on. A wrong choice is an invitation to try another, with no lost goods or time penalty.
This is recognition practice. Choosing a phrase or taking a hint does not earn the Word star points reserved for typed offers, or record an independent recall answer in the Word Lab.
Keep the bigger adventure
The short game is an easy entrance, rather than a new set of board rules. Open Choose your map, level and game length for all six maps, longer races and more rival boats.
Intermediate still offers longer conditional sentences and optional typing. Advanced still lets you make your own offer to the AI trader at a stall. You can change level during a trade. Our full games guide explains those options and the other games.
You can also open a room for friends, each playing in their own language.
What we want to learn from this update
A shorter setup and a word choice are design decisions, not proof that someone learns more. We want to find out whether new players reach a first deal, understand their choices and want another round.
Try a voyage. If something drags, or a phrase does not read naturally, tell us which map and language you were playing. That is useful feedback for the next one.
Catch the next boat
Pick your language and choose Play a short game. You can play as a guest.
